Philadelphia, Pa. – Samme Givens scored a season-high 16 points off the bench as Drexel opened the Colonial Athletic Association season with a 49-47 win against Northeastern at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Huskies had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Matt Janning's jumper came up short.
The Dragons held the lead for virtually the entire second half, but could not put the Huskies away. The lead got to as big as six points with 9:15 to play when freshman Derrick Thomas scored on a fast break lay-up. Northeastern answered with four straight free throws and the game remained close the rest of the game.
Evan Neisler hit a big jumper as the shot clock was ticking down to give Drexel a 47-42 lead with just 1:42 to play. The Huskies countered with a three-pointer from Janning to cut it to three. Neisler made a pair of clutch free throws with just a minute left to give Drexel a four-point lead at 49-45. Janning was fouled 11 seconds later and made both as the Huskies trimmed the lead to two points. Drexel had a chance to ice it but committed a turnover which gave Northeastern the ball with 17 seconds to play. The Huskies called timeout and then proceeded to get two shot in the last five seconds that both bounced off the rim.
Givens was 7-for-10 from the floor and had 10 of Drexel's 25 first-half points. Jamie Harris added 12 points and handed out a season-best five assists. Janning led the Huskies with 17 points. The Drexel defense held Northeastern to just 38 percent shooting in the second half and the Huskies had just six field goals in the second half. For the fourth time in the last five games, Drexel shot better than 40 percent from the floor. The Dragons ended the game shooting 44 percent despite making just one of their eight long-range attempts.
Drexel is off until next Sunday, when St. Francis (Pa.) visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
