Mytych Takes Fourth, Dragons Finish 18th at Cliff Keen Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Drexel wrestling competed in one of the top mid-season events of the season at the 2009 Cliff Keen Invitational where the Dragons finished 18th of 42 teams. The team's performance was highlighted by Steve Mytych's fourth-place finish at 133 pounds. Mytych reached the consolation finals before falling to No. 1 seed Tyler Graff of Wisconsin. Kyle Frey was the only other Drexel wreslter to place as the junior took eighth in the heavyweight division.
The fourth-seeded Mytych began his tournament run with a technical fall victory over Boise State's Ben Demulle as the senior did not surrender a point. In his second round match, Mytych defeated Daryle Thomas of Illinois, 4-1. In the quarterfinal matchup against No. 5 seed Boris Novachkov of Cal Poly, Mytych dropped a tough 4-2 decision that sent him to the consolation bracket while Novachkov ended up up winning the division. Mytych rebounded to down Michigan's Zac Stevens, 7-2, before earning a stunning pin against Arizona State's Ben Ashmore in just 1:19 to reach the consolation finals. The top-seeded Graff was able to pull out a 6-3 victory to give Mytych fourth place at the prestigious event.
Reigning CAA Co-Rookie of the Month Joe Booth had a memorable tournament as he stunned fifth-seeded Colton Salazar, 10-3, in the second round. Booth started his tournament with a major decision victory over Wisconsin's Greg Burke before dismantling Salazar in the second round. He continued his remarkable run with a 5-3 decision over West Virginia's Ryan Goodman. Booth was finally sent to the consolation bracket when he came up short against fourth-seeded and eventual runner-up Adam Hall of Boise State. Booth dropped his first match in the consolation bracket to end his tournament.
Heavyweight Kyle Frey picked up a pair of victories in his first two matches before running into eventual champion Nate Everhart of Indiana. Frey's two wins were both major decisions as he defeated Moises Alcala of CSU - Pueblo, 19-9, and then downing Tyler Cowman of Brown, 16-3. He picked up his third major decision win of the tournament when he topped Kurt Klimek of Cal St. Fullerton, 12-4. He defeated sixth-seeded Brandon WIlliamson of West Virginia, 6-1, to set up a rematch of the 2009 CAA Championship Final against Rider's Ed Bordas in the consolation semifinals. Bordas prevailed with a 6-0 win that sent Frey to the seventh-place match where he fell 4-2 to Oregon State's Clayton Jack.
