Women's Soccer Falls to La Salle in Season Opener, 4-2

Philadelphia – Drexel scored two goals late in the second half, but could not rally as La Salle defeated the Dragons, 4-2, in the season opener for both teams.
The Explorers broke open a close game with three goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half to make it a 4-0 La Salle lead. Ally Kenney, who scored the first goal of the game, put the Explorers up by a pair in the early going in the second half. She took control of the ball near midfield and raced down the left side of the field. Kenney then put a move on a Drexel defender before firing a shot into the upper right corner to make it 2-0. Kierstyn Mabey and Sara Copare added goals to give the Explorers a comfortable lead. Copare scored on a penalty kick when Drexel keeper Nicole Sinclair was given a card in the box.
Drexel got on the scoreboard for the first time in 2009 with just under 10 minutes to play when freshman Juliana Speroni knocked in a feed from fellow freshman, Megan Mahon. Another Drexel rookie, Sydney Douglas, cut the lead to 4-2 just minutes after entering her first collegiate game.

Traci DePasquale sent a ball to Kenney on the left side, and the senior beat Sinclair to give the Explorers the lead. The score would remain the same for the remainder of the half. Drexel outshot La Salle, 6-5, in the first 45 minutes but could not beat La Salle keeper Melissa Sanger, who made three of her four saves in the first half.
Sinclair finished with made three saves in her starting debut for the Dragons. Drexel is back in action on Sunday afternoon when St. Francis (Pa.) visits Vidas Field for a 3 p.m. kick-off.
