Philadelphia - Drexel field hockey unleashed a dominant performance that saw the Dragons outshoot Saint Joseph's 27-1 en route to an 8-0 victory. Susan Ciufo and Christina Mastropaolo each scored a pair of goals while Mariel Marinelli and Brittney Hausman recorded first career collegiate goals. The win moved the 14th-ranked Dragons to 5-0 on the season and sets up a showdown of unbeatens as Drexel visits No. 5 Connecticut on Thursday.
Drexel opened the scoring with a penalty stroke conversion by sophomore Sofia Sanguinetti just over 11 minutes into the game. Eleven minutes later Ciufo dribbled in the circle and rifled a shot into the cage. With seven minutes remaining in the half, Mastropaolo etched her name in the scorebook with a goal on a penalty corner as she sent her shot in from the left side of the cage. Jennifer Bolger was credited with an assist on the play.
One minute into the second half, Mastropaolo notched her fifth goal in the last two games as she dribbled in alone on goalie Kelly Swanick. Mastropaolo dodged Swanick as she charged and stuck the ball into the empty cage. Ciufo scored her second of the day shortly thereafter as she poked a rebound into the cage. Hausman followed with her first career goal as she scored in a scramble in front of the cage. Marinelli then scored on a Carolina Gibernau pass before Gibernau notched a goal of her own on a Bolger pass to cap the day's scoring.
Jenna Phillips registered her first career shutout as she made one save. Drexel held an 11-2 edge on penalty corners. The Drexel defense did not allow a second-half shot from the Hawks' offense.
