Storrs, Conn. - The final undefeated teams from the Colonial Athletic Association and the Big East will meet in one of the premiere games of the week as 12th-ranked Drexel travels to No. 6 UConn on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. The Dragons are 5-0 on the season after a pair of victories last week while the Huskies defeated 20th-ranked Michigan, 5-1, in their most recent game.
The Dragons moved up from 14th to 12th in the latest NFHCA poll, the highest Drexel has been ranked in program history. The team's marquee win came against No. 10 Duke as the Dragons dropped the Blue Devils, 4-3, in overtime to hand the Atlantic Coast Conference its only non-conference defeat thus far this season. Susan Ciufo, Carolina Gibernau and Christina Mastropaolo have each been named a CAA Player of the Week this season. Ciufo, a Third Team All-American last season, has six goals and two assists this season, including a pair of scores in Drexel's 8-0 drubbing of Saint Joseph's. Gibernau, a two-time First Team All-CAA pick, scored the game-tying and game-winning goals against Duke and has eight points through five games in 2009. Mastropaolo leads the team with eight goals and 19 points this season, including five goals in Drexel's last two games.
The Huskies have been equally impressive this season with a pair of wins over ranked opponents this season. The defense has not allowed more than one goal in any of its six games while the offense is averaging better than four goals per game. Loren Sherer is the reigning Big East Player of the Week and leads the squad in nearly every offensive category. She has eight goals, including three game-winners, and five assists this season. Andrea Mainiero sports a sub-1.00 goals against average and has a. .810 save percentage.
