Philadelphia - Drexel field hockey will host 10th-ranked Duke in a non-conference game at Buckley Field on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. Both teams earned a pair of victories in their first two games of the season with the Dragons topping Rutgers and La Salle while the Blue Devils knocked off 13th-ranked Louisville and eighth-ranked Michigan State.
Last season saw Drexel take a 1-0 lead to halftime before falling to No. 6 Duke, 4-1. Susan Ciufo scored the lone Drexel goal that game. She has been the Dragons' top offensive player this season with four goals and an assist and was the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week. She currently has the longest Division I point-scoring streak in the nation at 22 straight games. Christina Mastropaolo notched a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in Drexel's most recent victory over La Salle. The front line of Ciufo, Mastropaolo and Jen Cairone combined for 42 goals last season.
Duke defeated No. 13 Louisville thanks to penalty corners and a penalty stroke along with strong goalie play from Samantha Nelson. Amie Survilla and Lauren Miller each recorded goals on shots immediately after a stick stop on a penalty corner while Miller also contributed a goal on a penalty stroke. Nelson made five saves in the 3-0 victory. The teams were even in shots at six apiece while Louisville earned 10 penalty corners to the Blue Devils' four. Miller was the hero a day later as she converted a penalty stroke in overtime to defeat Michigan State, 3-2. Duke erased a 2-0 deficit in the second half to remain unbeaten in 2009.
