Dragons Fall to Penn in First Match of Spring Season

Philadelphia - Drexel won at first doubles and fourth singles, but ultimately could not hold off Penn in a tight contest that saw three singles matches go three sets. The Quakers (1-0) emerged victorious 6-1 in the first meeting between the Dragons (3-2) and their University City rival.
Zineb Hilali and Emma Brook teamed up at first doubles to produced one of the most entertaining matches fo the evening. The Dragons battled from behind to take the set into a tiebreaker where they won by a slim 7-5 margin. Penn won the other two doubles matches to claim the team point, but Drexel's victory served early notice that the match would be a hotly contested one.
At fourth singles Elise Leizerovich out-dueled Daniela DePaoli in a three-set classic. Leizerovich fell 6-3 in the first set before steeling her resolve to win the second 6-3. The pair then embarked on a lengthy third superset with Leizerovich outlasting DePaoli 12-10 to improve to 6-2 on the season in matchplay singles.
Both Zineb Hiali, at first singles, and Emma Brook, at third singles, took their matches to third sets before falling in frustrating fashion.
The Dragons are back in action on Saturday Feb. 6 when they host Morgan State at Riverwinds Tennis Center in New Jersey.
