Atlanta, Ga. – Jamie Harris poured in 21 of his career-high 32 points in the first half as Drexel defeated Georgia State, 72-57. The Dragons shot a season-high 68 percent in the first half as they opened up a 17-point lead at intermission and went on to the road victory against the Panthers, who were tied for the top spot in the CAA entering the game.
The Dragons (7-8, 2-1 CAA) raced out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the game. In its best offensive half of the season, Drexel shot a blistering 17-for-25 from the floor and knocked down five of its seven long-range attempts. Harris was 10-for-13 in the opening 20 minutes and hit numerous lay-ins and driving runners as the shot clock ticked down.
Drexel went on an 11-0 run midway through the half to increase an 11-point lead to 20. Harris had the first seven points in the run and then the Panthers aided the Dragons' cause by committing an intentional foul on Gerald Colds. The junior drove to the basket after a Georgia State (8-7, 2-1) turnover and was fouled hard by Trey Hampton. Colds made both shots and on the next possession he hit a jumper to make it 40-20.
The Dragons struggled to make shots in the second half, shooting just 6-for-22 in the final 20 minutes, but clamped down defensively and kept the Panthers from getting into striking range.
Gerald Colds scored 16 points and had three three-pointers. He was also 5-for-6 from the line. Freshman Daryl McCoy snared a career-high 13 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
The Dragons return home for their third game in five days on Wednesday against VCU. Tip-off at the DAC is at 7 p.m. It will be the first of two-straight home games, as the Dragons also host William & Mary on Saturday at 4 p.m.
