Atlanta, Ga. – Gerald Colds and Chris Fouch each had 19 points as Drexel defeated VCU, 75-72 in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons held off a late VCU rally to snap a six-game losing streak to the defending CAA champions.
The Dragons (8-8, 3-1) led by eight with 4:21 to play when Colds scored on a lay-in. VCU (9-4, 1-3) answered with six-straight points and cut the lead to two on a Bradford Burgess dunk. Drexel's Jamie Harris was then fouled but missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Evan Neisler came up with the offensive board to keep the possession alive. Harris drove to the bucket and gave Drexel a 73-69 lead with 1:12 left. Burgess, who finished with a game-high 30 points, was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to trim the lead to two. The Dragons then turned the ball over and VCU missed a shot but got the offensive board. The Rams called time out and went to Larry Sanders, their leading scorer, who was fouled by Daryl McCoy. The Rams made all 19 of their free throws up to that point, but Larry Sanders missed the first of two free throws as Drexel held on to a one-point lead. The Dragons got the ball in bounds and Colds was fouled. He calmly sank a pair of free throws to give Drexel a three-point lead at 75-72. Joey Rodriguez had the last shot for the Rams, but his three-pointer bounced off the rim and Drexel escaped with the win.
VCU opened the game with a 10-2 run, but the Dragons countered with 12-straight points later in the half to take a 26-19 lead. The game went back and forth the rest of the half, but Colds scored the final four points and took a 42-36 lead at the break. Fouch led the Dragons with 11 first-half points. Fouch and Colds each had three treys in the half.
Fouch finished with five three-pointers and 19 points in just 24 minutes. Colds was 4-for-6 from long range. Jamie Harris and Samme Givens were also in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Harris also had eight assists but committed eight turnovers against VCU's aggressive defense. Gienvs led the team with eight boards.
Burgess was 9-for-14 shooting and perfect in nine attempts from the line. His 30 points eclipsed his previous career-high of 18 points set earlier this season at Hampton. The Dragons held the Rams to just 35 percent shooting in the second half and forced 15 turnovers. The Dragons made 10 three-pointers, their second-highest total of the season.
Drexel dedicated its new basketball court in memory of former head basketball coach Sam Cozen on Wednesday night prior to the game. Cozen coached at Drexel for 16 years and has more wins than any other head coach in the school's history. Drexel returns to action on Saturday as William & Mary visits the DAC. The Tribe is 11-3 and 3-1 in CAA play.
