Philadelphia - The play of Drexel forward Gabriela Marginean during the 2009 calendar year was one of the bright spots in the Philadelphia sports scene this past year. This week Marginean has been recognized for her excellent play during Drexel's run to the 2009 CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament, as well as the body of work in her collegiate career. On Dec. 30, the Philadelphia Daily News released its Sportsperson of the Year voting, where Marginean ranked among the top 10 and received one first-place vote. On Jan. 3 the Philadelphia Inquirer's women's basketball beat writer Mel Greenberg placed Marginean on the starting five of his Philadelphia Women's Basketball All-Decade Team.
Marginean, the 2009 CAA Player of the Year and an All-America candidate this season, was the only women's basketball player to receive votes in the Sportsperson of the Year voting. She received nine overall votes, including one first-place vote, and edged out Philly fan favorites Brian Dawkins, Allen Iverson and Raul Ibanez for a place in the top 10. Villanova men's basketball coach Jay Wright was named 2009 Sportsperson of the Year after edging out Temple football coach Al Golden.
Greenberg, the founder of the women's basketball AP Poll and a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, announced his All-Decade teams for each of the six Div. I Philadelphia programs, as well as well as naming an overall All-Decade squad comprised of top players from each school. Marginean was joined by Candice Dupree (Temple), Trish Juhline (Villanova), Diana Caramanico (Penn), Sue Moran (Saint Joseph's) and Courtney Mix (Villanova). Marginean also headlined Drexel's All-Decade Team, according to Greenberg, which included, among others, Narissa Suber, Katrina Martin and Catherine Scanlon, Michelle Maslowski.
Marginean, who is just eight points away from breaking the all-time CAA career scoring record, will lead her team into action this week against William & Mary at home on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
