Philadelphia - One of the top offenses in the CAA squares off against one of the conference's best defensive units when the Dragons head south to take on the Virginia Commonwealth Rams this weekend. Drexel (7-6-1, 3-4-0) enters the weekend ranked third in the league in scoring, while the Rams (5-2-6, 2-1-4) have allowed the second fewest goals in the CAA. The two forces are set to clash on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Richmond, Va. Follow the match via livestats by clicking here.
Drexel is coming off a frustrating 1-0 overtime loss at Hofstra on Wednesday. Hofstra forced a frenetic pace on the Dragons from the opening tap and went on to outshoot Drexel 28-8. Fortunately for the Dragons, rookie keeper Pentti Pussinen was up to the challenge, making nine saves to keep the Pride off the board through 99 minutes of play. Hofstra netted the golden goal in the 100th minute, just 30 seconds before the end of the first overtime period. The Dragons have won just one road game in conference play, at Towson, but have dominated at home with a 5-1 record on Vidas Field.
VCU regained its form on Wednesday after suffering a 1-0 setback against William & Mary on Oct. 16, which snapped a 10-game unbeaten streak. The Rams played to a scoreless tie with conference leader UNC Wilmington at home. It was the sixth draw for VCU this season, which leads the conference, and the third shutout in CAA play for the Rams. Keeper Josh Pantazelos made his first start, in place of injured keeper Gabriel Rodriguez, and made two saves to earn the cleansheet. Rodriguez has led one of the most stout defensive units in the conference this season. The Rams have allowed just five goals in CAA play and have doled out a stingy 0.61 average tally allowance on the season. Offensively, C.J. Gehin-Scott leads VCU with five goals and two assists, ranking him eighth in the CAA in scoring.
The Rams lead the all-time series against Drexel 4-3-1, but the Dragons' three wins and tie have come in the teams' last four meetings. Drexel has not lost to VCU since 2005. The teams played to a 2-2 tie last season at Vidas Field. Nathan Page recorded a goal and an assist in the match, helping the Dragons to build a 2-0 lead in the first period. But the Rams came back to tie the match with two goals in the final 10 minutes of play, led by Ramirio Blandon's score and assist in the rally.
Drexel is in dire need of three points on the road to help their chances of cracking the top four in the conference. The Dragons are locked in a tie for fifth place with Northeastern, while the Rams are tied for fourth place with Georgia State at 10 points apiece.
