Philadelphia – Kamile Nacickaite led all scorers with 26 points as the Dragons (1-0) exploded for 86 points in a 86-55 win over La Salle in their season opener. Senior Jasmina Rosseel added 14 points and Hollie Mershon put in a career-high 15 points. Alexis Scott led the Explorers (1-2) with 11 points and four assists.
Drexel shot a sizzling 57.1 percent in the contest and held La Salle to just seven field goals in the second half and 28.2 percent shooting in the game. Nacickaite was 10-for-15 from the floor with all five of her misses coming from beyond the three-point arch.
One of the keys to Drexel's successful night on offense was the team's ball movement and selfess play. Four Dragons finished the game with four or more assists and 22 of the Dragons' 32 field goals came as the result of assists.
The Dragons also outworked the Explorers on the boards 37-32 led by a seven-rebound effort by Nacickaite and four apiece by Rosseel and Merson.
The Dragons came out on fire in their first minutes of competition this season, knocking down seven of their first 11 shots to open a 17-5 lead on the Explorers through the first seven minutes of play.
Nacickaite contributed 17 points in the first period while helping the Dragons build a lead as large as 23 points on a driving layup by Mershon put the Dragons on top 42-19 with three and a half minutes left in the half.
Drexel turned the ball over just four times in the period while forcing eight La Salle miscues and converting them into 14 points.
La Salle was able to slice the lead to 15 points at halftime, 47-32, thanks to a pair of three pointers by Alexis Scott and Ebonee Jones in the final minute of the half. But it was, without questions, the Dragons' opening 20 minutes.
The Explorers came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half, but were only able to trim Drexel's lead to 12 points. Another surge by the Dragons pushed their advantage back to 25 points at 72-47 on a layup by Ayana Lee with under eight to play off a nifty feed from Marisa Crane.
Minutes later, Nacickaite would hit a quick layup off a backdoor cut to give the Dragons a 30-point lead and she would top that by hitting Mershon with a pass in the fast break to push the score to 81-49. A pair of free throws made by Mershon as the result of an administrative technical foul gave the Dragons their largest lead of the contest, 83-49, with 3:27 to play.
Rookie Tory Thierolf capped scoring with her first career basket, a three-pointer from the left wing, with 47 seconds remaining. Fellow rookies Fiona Flanagan, Jackie Schluth and Ashley Davis also saw their first career minutes in the contest. Flanagan contributed six points on a pair of threes and also pulled down two rebounds in her collegiate debut.
The victory was Drexel's first season-opening win since the 2004-05 season when the Dragons beat Saint Joseph's at home. It was also the first time that Dragons emerged victorious from Tom Gola Arena since 1984.
The Dragons are back in action this Friday when they face Penn in their home opener at 7:00 p.m. The contest that is the first of four straight home games for Drexel.
