West Point, N.Y, - Drexel took four out of 10 individual bouts in a hard fought match against Army, but the Dragons were eventually overcome 26-13. Army (2-1) used a fall at heavy weight and two major decisions to defeat Drexel (1-2) in the Black Knights' home opener at Gillis Field House.
Army took an early 6-0 lead at 125 pounds but Drexel worked back with a sudden victory at 133 pounds as Frank Cimato picked up his second win of the season. Cimato's sudden victory over Jordan Thome kept the contest close for the Dragons.
Casey Thome then earned a major decision over Josh Yurasits at 141 pounds to give Army a 10-3 lead which it would add to in the next two pair-ups. In a close fought match, Army's Daniel Young was awarded a 7-6 decision over Drexel's John McDermott at 149. Entering the third-period all square, Young earned the deciding point by way of a take down.
At 157 pounds, Rudy Chelednik scored an 11-0 major decision over Charles Aungst to give the Black Knights a 17-3 advantage before Drexel's Joe Booth posted a 6-1 decision over Jake Vetter at 165 pounds to stop the momentum. Booth is one of four Dragons to record back-to-back victories so far this season.
In another tightly fought match, Drexel's Justin Wieller was edged 2-0 by Collin Wittmeyer at 174 pounds using an escape and one point of riding time for the decision. In Drexel's only bonus-point match of the dual, freshman Jamie Callender earned his second straight win with a 17-8 major decision over Wil Brown. Callender, wrestling at 184 pounds, leads Drexel in bonus points earned as he has recorded a fall and major decision in just three matches.
The final two bouts were split with Drexel's Brandon Palik wrestling to an 11-5 decision which cut the Black Knights' lead to 20-13. Palik has also recorded two wins in three matches this season. At heavy weight, Army's Christian Botero pinned Robert Schwalbenberg in the third-period ending the dual with Army victorious over Drexel, 26-13.
Drexel wrestling will be back in action this weekend, Saturday Nov. 13 when the Dragons travel west to Hershey, Pa. to take on The Citadel, Lock Haven and No. 25 North Carolina at the Hershey Duals. Match times are set for 10:30 a.m., 12:00 and 3:00 respectively.
