Box Score
Philadelphia – Daryl McCoy scored 15 points and added 18 rebounds to lead Drexel (4-1) past Saint Joseph's, 62-50, in front of a full house at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Chris Fouch added 17 for the Dragons, who hosted the Hawks (3-3) at the DAC for the first time since 1992.
McCoy dominated the game inside the entire night. The Hartford native was 7-for-8 from the floor and recorded his first career double-double. His 18 rebounds were the most for a Drexel player in a game since Malik Rose had 19 in the North Atlantic Championship game in 1996.
Drexel led for the majority of the game, but the Hawks remained within striking distance. The Dragons scored five straight points midway through the second half to open up a 10-point lead. McCoy converted a nice pass from Frantz Massenat and Chris Fouch drained a three-pointer on the next possession, forcing the Hawks to call time. They wouldn't be able to cut the lead any closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Drexel made just enough free throws to keep it a three-possession game. The Dragons were only 14-for-25 from the line, but made up for it with their work on the glass. Drexel doubled up the Hawks on the boards, 46-23, and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. Saint Joseph's only managed four offensive boards, which led to just two second chance points.
Massenat, a freshman who is starting at the point, had perhaps his best game of his young career. The Ewing, N.J. product handed out nine assists and brought the crowd to its feet with a driving dunk to give Drexel a 49-36 lead late in the contest.
The Hawks last lead in the game came with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, but Drexel closed the first 20 minutes with a 9-2 run to go to the locker room with a three-point lead. The Dragons led despite committing 10 first-half turnovers. Fouch had 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first half.
Carl Jones led Saint Joseph's with 20 points. He was 8-for-17 from the floor. Jones was the only Hawk to reach double figures in scoring. Drexel's Samme Givens grabbed 10 boards despite being limited due to foul trouble. The junior has had at least 10 boards in every game this season.
The Dragons begin conference play on Saturday afternoon in Boston. Drexel will face Northeastern at the TD Garden as part of a doubleheader. The Drexel-Northeastern game tips off at 4 p.m., with Boston College facing UMass in the nightcap.
