Dragons Hold on For 58-50 Win Over Northeastern at Home

Philadelphia - Gabriela Marginean led Drexel with 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Dragons held off a second-half rally by Northeastern (9-14, 4-8) to win 58-50 and snap a two-game losing skid. Marisa Crane chipped in 10 points and three assists for the Dragons who are now 15-8 overall and tied for second place in the CAA with a 9-3 record in conference play.
Drexel opened the game with a 10-0 spurt and led 30-17 at halftime, bolstered by 15 points from Marginean. But Northeastern used a 13-4 run to open the second half to slice the Dragons' lead to just four points with more than 13 minutes to play in the game.
After spending several of the early minutes of the second half on the bench, Drexel's starting five worked their way back into the game and helped the Dragons pull away for the victory. Marisa Crane hit a pull-up jumper in transition at the 5:04 mark to cap a 9-3 Drexel run and give the Dragons a comfortable 11-point margin.
Marginean banked in two layups and hit a pair of free throws in a span of three minutes midway through the half, asserting her scoring dominance over the team against whom she scored 41 points in their last meeting. Her team-high 12 rebounds led a Drexel effort on the boards that saw the Dragons outrebound Northeastern 38-25.
Drexel shot 45.2 percent from the floor and made 4-of-10 from deep, led by Crane who was 2-for-2 from long range. Northeastern shot a chilly 28 percent in the first half and finished the game making just over 35 percent of its shots. The Huskies also hoisted up 26 three-pointers, but connected on just six of them.
Kim Carr led Northeastern with 15 points. Brittany Wilson, the team's leading scorer and rebounder was limited to six points and five boards after putting up big numbers against the Dragons in the teams' first meeting this season.
The Dragons' win, combined with losses by Virginia Commonwealth and James Madison today, moves Drexel into a second-place tie with the Rams. The two teams will battle it out for sole possession of the ranking this Sunday, Feb. 14 in Richmond, Va.
