Richmond, Va. - Drexel women's basketball (15-8, 9-3 CAA) will face Virginia Commonwealth (16-8, 9-3) in a meeeting between the two teams tied for second place in the CAA standings. The game tips at 2:00 p.m. from VCU's Verizon Wireless Arena at the Segal Center in Richmond, Va. The contest is also a rematch of Drexel's 55-53 triumph on Jan. 24, when the Dragons won on a last-second shot by Gabriela Marginean.
Marginean and the Dragons snapped a two-game losing skid on Thursday with a 58-50 win over Northeastern and will look to carry the traction from that win into today's showdown. Marginean led all scorers with 25 points and also pulled in a season-high 12 rebounds. Northeastern trailed by double figures for much of the first half, but was able to cut Drexel's lead down to four points early in the second period with the Dragons' starters on the bench. As the regulars filtered back onto the court, Drexel was able to pull away for a comfortable victory.
The Rams fell in upset fashion to Hofstra, 74-66, on Thursday on Long Island. Nicole Capurso came off the bench to shoot down the Rams from deep, dropping 19 points, including five three-pointers on VCU. D'Andra Moss led a balanced VCU scoring attack and Kita Waller, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, added 16.
VCU leads the all-time series 9-6, but the Dragons have not won in Richmond since Feb. 5, 2006. Fans can listen to today's game on www.drexeldragons.com with Pat Delsi calling the action from the Segal Center.
