Philadelphia - Gabriela Marginean put her name in the record books once more this season, with a jumper in the lane at the 7:18 mark in the first half she became Philadelphia's all-time Div. I women's basketball scoring leader. She led the Dragons with 19 points in a 58-52 win over Towson (13-12, 7-7) while breaking the mark of 2,415 points set by Penn's Diana Caramanico in 2001. The victory was Drexel's 21st straight CAA home victory and keeps the Dragons (17-8, 11-3) in sole possession of second place in the conference. Marginean has now scored 2,428 points in her Drexel career.
Marginean's record-breaking bucket was Drexel's highlight in a lackluster first-half performance that saw the Dragons enter the locker room trailing 20-14. And inspired defensive effort in the second half, and a slightly better shooting percentage, allowed the Dragons to hold off Towson and salvage a regular-season series split with the Tigers.
The Dragons shot 43.8 percent in the second half in stark contrast to their 7-for-25 performance in the opening period. Towson once again outrebounded Drexel, but only by a 40-30 margin in this, their second meeting of the season. Kamile Nacickaite added 14 points and Jasmina Rosseel had 12, both Dragons knocked down four three-pointers as the team matched its season high with 10 treys in the contest. Shanae Baker-Brice led Towson with 13 points while Haliena Snowden added 11 and nine rebounds.
Hot shooting from deep did well to evaporate Towson's four-point advantage at the half, as Jasmina Rosseel canned a pair of threes in the first two and a half minutes and Kamile Nacickaite followed with one of her own to give Drexel a 25-24 lead.
Drexel stole momentum midway through the half when the Dragons held Towson off the board for more than six minutes while scoring 13 straight points. A Nacickaite three-pointer with 6:32 on the clock gave Drexel what seemed to be a commanding 11-point lead.
A Charmonique Watt three-pointer chopped the lead down to three points within three minutes of the surge, 46-43, but Nacickaite responded with another three-pointer. Two minutes later a Marginean three would keep the lead at six points.
Towson made its final run on a layup by Snowden that made it a 54-52 Drexel game with 50 seconds on the clock. The Tigers had a shot at tying the game when, with 38 seconds left Marginean missed an 18-foot baseline jumper off an inbounds pass and Towson collected the carom. This led to a three-point attempt by Baker-Brice from her own baseline with 26 seconds left. Tyler Hale grabbed the rebound amidst two Tigers and drew a foul.
Hale missed the front end of the subsequent one-and-one, but a hustling Ayana Lee kept the loose ball alive, and the wild carom eventually would go out of bounds after touching a Tiger.
On the inbounds pass Marginean caught the ball running toward half court and hurled it into the air before her momentum carried her over the midcourt stripe to avoid a backcourt violation. Towson picked off the floating ball and attempted a quick counter, but Hale intercepted the pass and was quickly fouled.
This time she knocked down both free throws to put Drexel on top 56-52 with 17.9 seconds left. Marisa Crane would put in two more after another Towson miss to give the Dragons their final margin of victory.
Lee's hustling effort in the contest led to a career-high three steals to lead Drexel. Crane finished with seven points and a team-leading five assists to go with three boards and two steals.
Marginean's record-breaking effort was witnessed by nearly 1,000 pink-clad fans supporting the WBCA's PinkZone cause to raise awareness of breast cancer. With a team-leading six rebounds she also surpassed the 900-rebound mark for her career. She is just the fourth player in Drexel history to amass 900 boards.
The Dragons will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21 when they host the Hofstra Pride in a 1:00 p.m. contest at the DAC.
