Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will host the Hofstra Pride in a 1:00 p.m. tip this afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. After a tight 58-52 win over Towson on Thursday, the Dragons (17-8, 11-3) are within reach of a first-round bye in the CAA Tournament if they can beat the Pride (15-11, 8-6) today for the second time this season.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Drexel finds itself in sole possession of second place in the CAA with an 11-3 record, one game behind an Old Dominion (12-2) team who beat the Dragons earlier this season. A victory today would mean that Drexel could do no worse than tie Delaware for fourth place in the conference, with the top four teams receiving first-round tournament byes. But the Dragons hold a head-to-head tie-breaker against the Blue Hens, after defeating them twice this season.
Drexel's win on Thursday over Towson was the backdrop for a historic night by Gabriela Marginean, who became Philadelphia Div. I women's basketball's all-time leading scorer. Her hook shot with 7:18 remaining in the first half moved her past Penn's Diana Caramanico for first place on the prestigeous list. Marginean finished with a game-high 19 points and enters today's game with 2,428 points in her career.
Hofstra defeated George Mason 59-49 in its last contest on Thursday. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Pride. Since Drexel's 51-41 win over Hofstra in Hempstead on Jan. 14, the Pride have rallied for victories over James Madison, in overtime, and against VCU. Since the start of conference play, Hofstra's rookie forward Shante Evans has averaged a double-double, 14.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Againt George Mason, Evans had 20 points and 17 rebounds -nine of them on the offensive glass. Hofstra scored 34 of its points in the paint.
Drexel leads the all-time series against Hofstra 33-20 and the Dragons have won six straight against the Pride. Hofstra's last win against Drexel was Feb. 15, 2007. The Dragons are also defending a 21-game home court winning streak in CAA games today.
