Harrisonburg, Va. - This season Drexel senior Gabriela Marginean played up to a number of lofty expectations placed on her as the returning CAA Player of the Year. As she closes out the final season of one of the greatest careers the conference has seen to date, Marginean took home her third First Team All-CAA Honor on Thursday. In addition, the league recognized her outstanding achievements as a leader on and off the court by naming her a co-recipient of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at its annual Women's Basketball Awards Banquet. Five Dragons also received All-Academic recognition led by Marisa Crane, who was a First Team All-Academic selection. Marginean, Tyler Hale, Jasmina Rosseel and Jennifer Stjarnstrom all earned All-Academic Honorable Mentions.
Marginean became the all-time scoring leader at Drexel, the CAA and in the history of Philadelphia women's basketball this year. She is ranked third in the CAA and top 10 in the nation in scoring and is also among the NCAAs most accurate free-throw shooters entering the conference tournament. Marginean also broke conference records for free throws and field goals made and attempted this season. Marginean is the first Drexel women's player ever to earn First Team All-CAA distinction three times. In her freshman year she was a Third Team All-CAA selection and the league's Rookie of the Year.
Her leadership by example on the court and in the community was also recognized as part of the Dean Ehlers Award presentation. Marginean has been the driving force behind much of the team's community outreach efforts this season including food and clothing drives, holiday visits and bringing youth groups and teams out to basketball games. Marginean is the third Dragon to receive the Dean Ehlers Award. She joins Michelle Maslowski ('01) and Andrea Peterson ('09) as former recipients. She shared this year's honor with Georgia State senior Brittany Graham.
Drexel begins defense of its CAA title on Friday at 2:30 p.m. when the Dragons face the winner of an opening-round game between Delaware and George Mason.
