Omaha, Neb. - Steve Mytych pulled out a pair of victories in his first two bouts on the second day of the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships. His big start puts the senior one win away from guaranteeing a top-eight finish and All-America honors at 133 pounds. Mytych defeated Kevin Smith of Buffalo before outlasting David Marble of Bucknell in overtime to move to within one victory of placing. Drexel's other representative, Joe Booth, was pinned by ninth-seeded Matt Moley of Bloomsburg to end his NCAA Championships run.
Mytych picked up a 5-2 decision over Smith to set up a showdown with Marble. The Bucknell wrestler was able to send the match to overtime before Mytych pulled out a thrilling 5-3 triumph in the first sudden victory period. Mytych will now face Danny Mitcheff of Kent State with the winner taking All-American status. Mitcheff and Mytych have faced each other two times previously this season with Mitcheff taking the first meeting in overtime before Mytych won the rematch at the Virginia Duals. The bout is scheduled to start around 6:00 p.m. tonight.
