Philadelphia - Drexel flexed its offense as the 11th-ranked Dragons overpowered Saint Joseph's, 7-1. The win was the 11th straight for Drexel against Philadelphia-area opponents and the 16th straight against schools in Pennsylvania. Susan Ciufo and Elizabeth Koch each scored two goals while Kim Tunell added a goal and a pair of assists. The win moved Drexel to 1-1 on the season while the Hawks dropped to 1-2.
The Dragons wasted little time as Ciufo scored 95 seconds into the game after deflecting a pass from Tunell who dribbled down the middle of the Hawks' defensive half. Just under 10 minutes into the game, Drexel doubled its edge as Megan Keller took a pass from Sofia Sanguinetti on a broken penalty corner play and found the back of the cage. Amanda Fleischut battled three different Saint Joseph's defenders in the circle before finding enough space to fire a shot that beat Hawks' goalie Kelly Swanick. With just over five minutes remaining Drexel capped the half's scoring when Tunell rifled a shot into the cage on a penalty corner.
Ciufo once again scored quickly after the start of a half as she finished on a pass from Ashley Santee. The Hawks' got their lone goal of the game just over a minute later when Therese Doyle scored on a Hannah Rogers assist but Koch put the game away with the final two goals of the game.
Jenna Phillips made four saves as she recorded her 20th career victory in the cage for the Dragons. Swanick stopped two shots in the first half before Liz Messaros relieved her at halftime and made nine saves. Drexel outshot the Hawks, 24-9, and took 12 penalty corners to the visitor's three.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday when the Dragons host Ohio University at noon.
