Second Half Comeback Propels Dragons Past ODU, 62-57

Philadelphia – Daryl McCoy had his second straight double-double as Drexel rallied from a 12-point first half deficit and defeated Old Dominion in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 62-57. The Dragons opened up the second half with a 16-2 run to take the lead for good and improve to 11-4 (3-2 CAA) on the season.
Old Dominion held a 32-24 lead at intermission, but the momentum swung Drexel's way early in the second half. The Monarchs (12-4, 3-2) made just one of their first 14 shots to start the second half as the Dragons' shots started to fall. Samme Givens tied the game at 34 on a three-point play and Chris Fouch nailed a trey to give Drexel the lead at 37-34. Drexel would not trail again and increased the lead to as many as 16 points.
The Monarchs made a late run to make the final deficit just five points. Kent Bazemore sank a three points with 3.5 seconds remaining after the Dragons missed three of four free throws in the final 39 seconds.
The first half was all Old Dominion as the Monarchs held Drexel to just nine field goals. ODU committed just one turnover in the first half and scored eight points off Dragon miscues. Ben Finney had 10 points for the Monarchs, who opened the game with a 13-4 run.
McCoy had another huge game for the Dragons. The sophomore scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, including nine in the second half. Fouch led the way with 16 points for Drexel and was 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Givens and Gerald Colds each added 12 points. Colds also had four assists without a turnover and made six of his eight free throw attempts.
Bazemore and Keyon Carter led ODU with 13 points. Finney finished with 12 points, seven boards and a pair of three-pointers.
The game featured two of the top rebounding teams in the nation, as Drexel entered the contest third in the country in rebound margin and ODU was fourth. The teams were even on the boards at the half, but Drexel owned the glass in the second half, outrebounding the Monarchs by 10. Drexel's defense played much better in the final 20 minutes as well, holding ODU to just 28 percent shooting. The Monarchs had just one field goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half.
Drexel heads to Virginia to face William & Mary on Saturday night at Kaplan Arena. Game-time is set for 7 p.m. Old Dominion will play at Hofstra on Saturday.
