Fairfax, Va. – George Mason scored 29 points from the foul line in a 71-47 win against Drexel in a foul-plagued game at the Patriot Center. The Patriots held Drexel to just five field goals in the second half and improved to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in CAA play. Drexel fell to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the CAA.
Mason opened the second half with a 13-4 run and pulled away. There were 51 fouls called in the game, including 30 in the second half. Mason made 29 of 38 from the line overall. Luke Hancock led the Patriots with 16 points and nine rebounds. Cam Long added 14 points. Chris Fouch led Drexel with 11 points off the bench. He was the only Dragon in double figures.
The game started off slow as the score was even at four apiece five minutes. George Mason took a 17-6 lead as Luke Hancock scored nine of Mason's 11 points in the early going. The lead got to as many as 12 points at one point, but the Dragons answered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 25-21. Daryl McCoy had a pair of buckets during that stretch. Mason answered the run and went to halftime ahead, 37-30. The Patriots made the most of their opportunities at the line, knocking down 14 of 17 free throws. Hancock was 6-for-6 from the line and Ryan Pearson was 6-for-7. Samme Givens led the Dragons with nine points, five rebounds and two blocks in the first half.
The Dragons head home for a pair of games, starting on Saturday against Northeastern on homecoming weekend Saturday at 2 p.m. Drexel, who will play three games in five days starting with the Huskies, will face Georgia State on Monday and at James Madison next Wednesday night.
