Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel raced out to a 13-2 lead and defeated Northeastern at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 72-58. Samme Givens and Chris Fouch each scored 17 points as the Dragons improved to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in the CAA.
Givens scored six of Drexel's first eight points as the Dragons held the Huskies (4-15, 0-8 CAA) off the board for more than four and a half minutes to start the game. Drexel opened up a 14-point lead during the half and never trailed in the game. Northeastern was held to just six field goals in the first half. The Huskies shot 29 percent in the half and trailed 34-21 at intermission.
Drexel's offense continued to play well in the second half as the Dragons opened up a 21-point lead with 8:17 to play. Northeastern cut the lead to 12 points on two occasions as the Huskies started to make their long-range attempts. NU made five three-pointers in the final 7:13 of the game and was 6-for-12 from deep in the second half. Drexel iced the game at the free-throw line sinking 77 percent of its free throws in the second half. The Dragons came into the game shooting just 60 percent as a team from the charity stripe.
Givens was 6-for-9 from the floor and also chipped in with eight rebounds for the Dragons. Fouch had a productive 17 points, making six of his eight shots from the floor. He was 3-for-4 from deep in only 25 minutes of action. Gerald Colds added 12 points, while Dartaye Ruffin led the squad with 10 rebounds. The Dragons outrebounded the Huskies, 38-23, and shot 47 percent in the game.
Joel Smith led the Huskies with 19 points and had six three-pointers. Chaisson Allen, who came into the game sixth in the CAA in scoring, was held to just three points, due mainly to the defensive efforts of Drexel's Derrick Thomas. Thomas played all 40 minutes and held Allen to just 1-for-8 shooting in the game.
The Dragons conclude their brief two-game homestand on Monday night against Georgia State. The teams tip-off at 7 p.m. at the DAC.
