Game Notes
Fairfax, Va. - The Drexel women look for their ninth straight win over George Mason tonight in a 7:00 tilt at the Patriot Center. The Dragons (11-5, 3-2) are coming off a 59-58 win at the buzzer in Williamsburg on Sunday while the Patriots (7-9, 1-4), losers of four straight, are coming off an 83-54 setback at James Madison. Fans can catch the action via live audio on Drexel Game Central.
The Dragons face a resurgent George Mason team tonight. The Patriots got off to their best non-conference start under Head Coach Jeri Porter, and are ranked as one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league, holding opponents to just 56.9 points per game. George Mason had won four straight heading into conference play and opened its CAA schedule with a win over Georgia State. Since then, however, the Patriots have stumbled in consecutive losses to Old Dominion, VCU, UNC Wilmington and James Madison, all teams currently ranked among the top four in the conference. Brittany Poindexter has been the Patriots most reliable player over the past four seasons. The senior guard is a four-year starter and has led the team in scoring for three straight years and averages 12.4 points per game this season.
Drexel's three-game Virginia road trip is finally grinding to a halt tonight. The Dragons are also finishing stretch of games in which they played eight of 10 on the road. A win tonight would put their record at 6-4 during that time, and 4-4 in the road contests. Kamile Nacickaite helped Drexel escape Williamsburg with a win on Sunday. The junior's buzzer-beating three-pointer gave her team the winning margin. She also compiled her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Jasmina Rosseel hit a key three-pointer in the Dragons' last-minute rally and finished 3-for-4 from deep. The turning point in the game came midway through the half with the Dragons trailing by four points. Redshirt freshman Ashley Davis entered the game and scored six points, on a three-pointer and a three-point conversion, in less than a minute to get her team within one point of the Tribe and shift the momentum for the Dragons.
The Dragons have historically played well against the Patriots, holding a 10-5 lead in the all-time series including eight straight victories over Mason. Drexel's last loss to the Patriots was during the 2004-05 season. The penultimate game of the regular-season saw the Dragons fall 46-44 in Fairfax. The team subsequently bounced back to defeat Old Dominion at home on Senior Day, denying the Lady Monarchs the top seed in the CAA Tournament. A week later, Drexel would return to the Patriot Center and beat the Patriots in the quarterfinals of the tournament beginning the Dragons' current run of victories over Mason.
