Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will put its perfect home court record on the line against the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday in the clumination of a weekend of basketball competition against Drexel's longtime rival. The 9-4 Dragons are coming off a 56-46 win against Georgia State on Thursday, while Delaware (9-4, 2-0) edged out Northeastern 61-51 on the road. Tip time is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The 61st edition of the Drexel vs. Delaware rivalry features a pair of teams in transition. The Blue Hens have played six games without 2010 CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne, including both of their conference contests. The Dragons saw four players, who haven't seen much action this season, come off the bench to lead them to victory on Thursday after a starting lineup of the able faltered in the first half.
Sophomore guard Hollie Mershon took advantage of the extra minutes and led the team with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Drexel's bench combined to score 31 of the team's 56 points in the win. Rookie Tory Thierolf put in a career-high eight points while knocking down both of her three-point attempts. Redshirt freshman Ashley Davis scored her first career points, on a three-pointer, and finished with five in the contest. Drexel used a 22-4 run in the second half to recover from a 12-point deficit and pull out the victory.
For the Blue Hens, Lauren Carra scored a team-high 20 points at Northeastern. With Delle Donne on the shelf the past few games, Carra is the team's leading scorer, averaging 11.2 points per game and leading Delaware in three-point shooting. The Blue Hens are also playing without point guard Kayla Miller, who went down early in the year with a season-ending back injury. Sophomore guard Jasmine Parker is averaging better than nine points and nine rebounds per game as one of the team's top all-around players.
Delaware leads the all-time series, Drexel's longest against and opponent since becoming a Div. I program, 38-22. The teams faced eachother three times last season, twice in the regular-season and once in the CAA Tournament. All three games went into overtime with Drexel winning the first two and Delaware knocking the Dragons from the CAA Tournament. The Dragons had won six straight over Delaware before falling in the quarterfinals in Harrisonburg, Va.
