Drexel Swimmers Dominate in Season Opener

Chester, Pa. – The Drexel swim team had a victorious season opener at Widener on Wednesday night. The men defeated the Pride by a score of 104-80, while the women won, 110-89. The Dragons placed first in 14 of 22 events.
The meet opened with the 200 medley relay. Morgan Cichewicz, Rebecca Heffernan, Julia Hondros, and Malin Viberg placed second with a time of 1:55:51. On the men's side, Alex Bagshaw, Ilan Khayt, Zorbey Canturk, and Alex Chialastri posted a top-time of 1:38.97.
Drexel continued dominate the water. Freshman Kelly Trussell and junior David Boodey both place first in the 1000 freestyle events. Teammates Lauren Faykes and Dan Durazo stopped the clock at 2:00.77 and 1:50.67 for first place in the 200 freestyle events. Matthew Grooms clocked in behind Durazo for second place.
Three freshmen had impressive debuts taking the top spots in the 50 freestyle event. Drexel's Alex Chialastri led the squad with a 22.15, followed by Alex Galinskiy and Mike Shaeffer. Senior standout Devina Tyagi took first place with a time of 24.72 in the 50 freestyle.
Freshman Chad Schmidt took the water for the first time as a Dragon and won the 200 IM event before the first intermission. Schmidt stopped the clock at 2:00.95 followed by Ilan Khayt in second.
Drexel's Lauren Faykes and freshman Brianna Bentz posted the top two times, 59.73 and 59.91, in the 100 butterfly event. On the men's side, the Dragons sweep the same event. Grooms registered another first place finish with a time of 54.18. Teammates Zorbey Canturk, Carson Elias, and Andrew Reimon followed respectively.
The Dragons also took the top times in both the men's and women's 100 freestyle event. Freshmen Jessica Gidzinski and Mike Krohn took first place in the event. Gidzinski posted a top-time of 56.57, while Krohn stopped the clock at 49.39. Sophomore Gizem Yali and Morgan Cichewicz had the fastest times in the 100 backstroke event. Yali clocked in at 1:02.40.
The Dragons closed out the day with another top finish by Kelly Trussell. The Schnecksville, Pa. native outlasted Widener's Colleen Tighe for first place with a time of 5:24.20. Drexel's Victoria Mayer came in third.
Drexel will host La Salle on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. in the Drexel Pool at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
