No. 11 California Defeats Drexel Field Hockey, 3-2, in Overtime

Philadelphia - No. 11 California outlasted Drexel, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons outshot California 15-10, while the Golden Bears held a slim 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. The loss dropped Drexel to 8-4 on the season, while California improved to 11-2. The Dragons are now 6-1 at Buckley Field.
At 18:26 in the opening half, senior Elizabeth Koch controlled the rebound from teammate Ashley Santee's shot and gave the Dragons the first lead of the game, 1-0. The Golden Bears had four penalty corner opportunities, but were unable to put points on the board before the first half came to an end.
With just over eight minutes into the second half, California's Andrea Earle slipped past Drexel's Kim Chiarelli and pushed the ball into the cage to tie the game, 1-1. Drexel's Amanda Fleischut blasted a shot from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner, but the ball was blocked by California's Maddie Hand. At 17:22, California's Jordan O'Reilly scored an unassisted goal to give the Golden Bears the lead, 2-1.
Drexel continued to put pressure on California's defense. At 29:24 in the second half, Senior Ashley Santee recovered a loose ball from Maddie Hand's pads and flicked it into the top left of the cage to tie the game for the second time, 2-2.
The Golden Bears gained possession at the beginning of overtime play. California's Rachelle Comeau deflected a long ball from teammate Deanna Kennedy into the cage to end the game. California's Maddie Hand made seven saves in the win.
Drexel returns to Buckley Field on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. as the Dragons host William and Mary.
