Box Score
Philadelphia – The Drexel women's soccer team fought to a scoreless tie with Northeastern University in a Colonial Athletic Association match. The teams came into the match tied for third in the CAA and are now 2-1-1 in conference play this season.
The teams played a scoreless, but exciting first half. Drexel (4-5-3) outshot the Huskies, 8-3, but Northeastern (6-5-1) had the best opportunity of the half. Veronica Napoli was awarded a penalty kick after a Dragon was called for a push in the box. Napoli fired towards the upper left, but was thwarted by Drexel keeper Eve Badana. The Dragons countered and almost got on the board when Megan Hammaker appeared to get possession by herself, but Northeastern goalkeeper Paige Burnett met the ball at almost the same time and kept the game scoreless.
Northeastern came out with much more urgency in the second half and had numerous scoring opportunities. The Huskies had eight shots in the second half, including two by Greta Samuelsdottir. Drexel keeper Eve Badana made a save and then contained the rebound with 23 minutes remaining. In the 78th minute Badana dove and kept Samuelsdottir's shot aimed at the right corner out. Just one minute later, NU's Lahaina Zoller had an opportunity off a cross, but her chance hit the post.
In the overtimes, Napoli had three scoring chances for Northeastern. Her first chance from just inside the box was saved by Badana. It looked as though the Huskies would win it when Napoli broke in one on one a few minutes later, but Badana came up big again and then saved the rebound shot as well.
Badana made seven saves for Drexel, while Burnett made six stops for the Huskies. Each team had 17 shots in the match. Drexel is off until next weekend when the Dragons head south for a pair of CAA matches. The Dragons visit William & Mary on Friday night and play at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon.
