Hofstra Defeats Drexel Field Hockey, 4-3, on Senior Day

Philadelphia – The Drexel women's field hockey team's 2011 season came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Hofstra on Senior Day at Buckley Field. The Dragons played a strong second half, but their three late goals weren't enough to pass the Pride. Hofstra held a slim advantage in shots, 14-13, and had seven penalty corners to Drexel's two. The Dragons finished with 10-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Hofstra took the lead in the in the 10th minute of the game. The Pride's Krizia Layne crossed the ball to teammate Genna Kovar who swept the ball into the cage. Moments later, Hofstra charged back into the Dragons' circle and earned a penalty stroke goal by Amy-Lee Levey. The Pride held onto the two-goal lead, 2-0, as the opening half came to an end. Hofstra outshot Drexel, 7-4, and had four penalty corner opportunities in the first.
In the opening minutes of the second half, junior Amanda Fleischut recovered a loose ball from Elise DiDonato's blocked shot and scored to cut the Pride's lead in half, 2-1. Drexel kept the intensity high, but Kovar carried the ball into the Dragons' circle and fired into the right side of the cage. With just over nine minutes left in the second, Hofstra had a 3-1 lead over Drexel. Two minutes later, the Pride's Jonel Boileau scored off of a rebound.
At 3:36, Drexel's Ashley Santee answered back with a goal from teammate Christina Conrad's pass. Elise DiDonato followed with an unassisted goal. The Dragons were down by one, 4-3, but Hofstra maintained possession until the clock expired.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli made three saves. Chiarelli tallied 60 saves on the season. Hofstra's Amanda Heyde also had three stops.
