PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team returns to Vidas Field on Saturday as they take on the Towson Tigers at 4:00 p.m. Drexel is coming off one of its better defensive performances of the season, an effort they will need to replicate to emerge victorious in what has become a high-scoring CAA rivalry with Towson.
Highlighted by sophomore goalkeeper Pentti Pussinen's six saves, the Dragons shut out George Mason on Wednesday evening, their third whitewashing of the season. The 0-0 draw was energizing for Drexel, which was playing its second consecutive CAA road match and is still in search of its first conference victory. Pussinen's six saves included game savers in the final minutes of regulation and overtime.
On Saturday, the Dragons will take on Towson, which comes into the contest 0-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Like Drexel, the Tigers have just one win this season, a 4-1 win over Albany on September 20. Towson has struggled mightily on the road, netting just one goal in four contests away from the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Despite the struggling offenses on both sides, Saturday's game could produce some fireworks, if history repeats itself. Last year, the Dragons eked out a 4-3 triumph. They erased an early 1-0 Tiger advantage to go up 3-1 with three goals in a 10-minute span midway through the first half. Towson stormed back with consecutive goals to knot the score early in the second half, but Ken Tribbett, who had also scored the Dragons' third goal of the game, notched the game-winner in the 57th minute. Overall, Drexel is 19-13-3 when facing the Tigers.
