Box Score
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – Norfolk State (2-1) held off a late Drexel rally and upset the Dragons, 61-56, in the first round of the Paradise Jam. Drexel's Damion Lee had a career-high 21 points in the loss.
Drexel trailed by 10 at halftime but played well in the early going of the second half and took the lead at 32-31, on a Frantz Massenat lay-up with 13:18 to play in the game. It was a short-lived lead as the Spartans capitalized on Drexel turnovers and poor shooting. Norfolk extended the lead to as many as 11 points before the Dragons began to mount a comeback. The Norfolk State lead shrank to six with 2:25 to play after two Kazembe Abif made two free throws. Drexel made two stops in a row on the defensive end, but could not score as the Spartans pulled away and advanced to the semifinals.
The Dragons struggled in the early going and found themselves down, 8-0, less than six minutes in. They finally broke the drought when Frantz Massenat converted one of two at the line after a Norfolk State administrative technical foul. Drexel seemed to get back on track and cut the Spartans' lead to 16-14 on a Derrick Thomas basket. However, Norfolk State answered with a 9-2 run of its own and went to the break ahead, 28-18.
Chris McEachin led the Spartans with 15 points. Kyle O'Quinn (11 pts., 12 reb.) and Pendarvis Williams (10 pts., 10 reb.) each had double-doubles. Norfolk State shot 46 percent from the floor and surprisingly outrebounded the Dragons, who finished third in the nation in rebound margin last year, 38-31.
Lee was 9-for-16 from the floor. He hit three three-pointers, including two in the final minute. Massenat finished with 10 points, but committed seven turnovers. The Dragons finished the game with 16 miscues and shot just 39 percent.
Drexel will play at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon against the loser of the TCU-Virginia game. Those two teams play this evening at 7 p.m.
