BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - For a third straight game, the Drexel women's basketball team roared its way back into a game that appeared all but over in the final minutes, but just like the first two times, the comeback fell short as the Dragons were defeated by Princeton, 63-51. Drexel cut a 13-point second-half Princeton lead to five with 1:50 to play, but could not get the stop it needed as the Tigers pulled away in the end.
Hollie Mershon led the Dragons with 15 points, her career-best 12th-straight game in double figures. Tyler Hale and Kamile Nacickaite added 10 points each. Niveen Rasheed paced Princeton with 22 points, adding 14 rebounds. As a team, the Tigers outrebounded Drexel 46-31.
Despite getting 12 offensive rebounds, Princeton managed just six second-chance points as the Dragons stayed solid on defense for much of the afternoon. The Tigers hit at a 42.6 percent clip from the floor, and just 25.0 percent (3-for-12) from long range. Unfortunately, Princeton was able to stagnate the Drexel offense, allowing them just six field goals in the first half and 16-of-56 (28.6 percent) for the game.
Princeton led by 12 with 3:10 to play when Hale scooped in a lay-up to cut the lead to 55-45. After a Princeton turnover, Mershon knocked down her first three-pointer of the game to make it 55-48. Then, just over 30 seconds later, a pull up jumper by Fiona Flanagan cut the deficit to 55-50.
On the ensuing possession, the Tigers looked completely lost against the Drexel press, weaving around the back court unable to find any opening. With time winding down on the shot clock and the ball still 70 feet from the hoop, Princeton's Lauren Edwards managed to cut between two Drexel defenders and find Kate Miller, who had gotten behind the defense for an easy lay-up that proved to be the backbreaker to the Dragons.
Drexel will get back on the court on Thursday evening when they visit Hofstra for the resumption of Colonial Athletic Association play. The Dragons defeated UNCW in their conference opener early in December, and will play nothing but CAA games for the rest of the regular season.
