BOX SCORE
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Drexel women's basketball team dropped its first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season on Thursday night, as they fell at Hofstra, 76-65. Hollie Mershon had 21 points, one of three Dragons in double figures, and Ayana Lee added a career-high nine rebounds, but it was not enough to keep up with the top scoring offense in the league.
Drexel (5-7, 1-1) fell for the fourth consecutive game with the loss.
In a fast-paced, physical ballgame, the Dragons hung with Hofstra throughout the first half. They trailed 35-30 at the break, but if not for 12 first-half turnovers, Drexel may have been able to go into the break with the advantage. Two straight three-pointers by Mershon late in the half gave the Dragons a brief 26-25 lead with 3:38 to play, but Hofstra had an answer. The same held true moments later, after Taylor Wootton's jumper put the Dragons back on top, 28-27. After a missed jumper by Hofstra's Candace Bond, Hofstra forced a Drexel turnover, then got a lay-up to put the Pride up 29-28. They would not trail the rest of the way.
The pace did not slow down in the second half, and it got to the Dragons before long. Trailing 39-32, Kamile Nacickaite worked her way inside for two of her 18 points, pulling Drexel back within five. After that, though, Hofstra would score the game's next five points, and would go on a 17-5 run to extend their lead to 56-39 with 12:32 to play, their largest lead of the night.
Drexel fought back late, cutting the deficit to nine when Mershon nailed a three with 1:36 to play. They would get within eight 34 seconds later, but that would be as close as it got.
For Mershon, the 21 points marked her third 20-point output of the season. She added five rebounds, three assists and a season-high three steals. The Dragons forced 20 Hofstra turnovers, including a season-best 11 steals.
Ayana Lee, who finished with five points, pulled down a career high nine rebounds, a quarter of the team's boards. Drexel did a solid job on the glass, pulling down 36 rebounds compared to 39 for Hofstra, which came into the game averaging over 44 rebounds per contest.
Taylor Wootton added 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half.
Drexel will attempt to end its losing streak on Sunday afternoon, when they host Towson at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 2:00 p.m.
