Philadelphia – Chris Fouch nailed a three-pointer with 12 seconds to play to give Drexel a 54-52 win against William & Mary at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Fouch's trey broke a 51-51 tie and Drexel held on for its 17th win of the season.
The Dragons (17-8, 9-6 CAA) trailed by four with just over four minutes to play before Fouch sank a three-pointer to cut the Tribe (7-19, 3-12 CAA) lead to 48-47 with 3:18 left. It was Fouch's first three-pointer in four games as the sophomore had been mired in an 0-for-16 slump from behind the arc. The Tribe answered with a Quinn McDowell lay-up a few possessions later to take a three-point lead. Drexel scored the next four points from the line, as freshmen Dartaye Ruffin and Frantz Massenat each sank a pair from the stripe. The Dragons one-point lead didn't last for long as William & Mary's Julian Boatner was fouled with just 44 seconds left. Boatner made the first to tie it, but missed the second. On the next possession, Fouch sank what proved to be the game-winner from the corner after taking a pass from Dartaye Ruffin, who was positioned in the post. The Dragons fouled Brandon Britt with five seconds left, sending him to the line. He made one of two and Ruffin came up with the rebound. Ruffin could have sealed the game but missed both free throws. The Tribe came up with the board, threw the ball into the frontcourt to McDowell, whose contested desperation three-pointer from the left wing missed to give Drexel the win.
Drexel led by just a point at halftime, 24-23. William & Mary opened up a six-point lead in the early going, before an 11-0 Drexel run gave the Dragons the lead late. Ruffin had six of the points during the run and had 10 points in the first half.
Fouch and Ruffin each scored 16 points off the bench. Ruffin tied his career-high in scoring and also had six rebounds. Daryl McCoy led the Dragons with nine rebounds. Samme Givens, who had six boards, moved into 10th place on Drexel's career rebounding list. He now has 719 in his career.
Marcus Kitts led the Tribe with 11 points. McDowell added nine points but was just 3-for-9 from the floor. The Tribe shot 56 percent in the second half, but turned the ball over seven time in the final 20 minutes.
Drexel heads to the road early next week to face UNC Wilmington on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Trask Coliseum. The Dragons return home for a two-game homestand beginning with a Friday night contest against Kent State. That game, which is part of ESPN's BracketBusters weekend, can be seen live on ESPNU at 9 p.m. from the DAC.
