Philadelphia - Drexel (14-10, 6-7) welcomes the Tribe of William & Mary (2-21, 1-12 CAA) to the DAC tonight on a special evening dedicated to raising awarness of and funds to fight breast cancer. The annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game tips off at 7:07 p.m. and will be televised on Comcast SportsNet in the Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic regions. Players, coaches and fans will be wearing pink as part of the Pink Zone initiative and there will be a special halftime performance by a dance team comprise of 81 former NFL Cheerleaders as part of an effort to raise money for Susan G. Komen For the Cure.
The Dragons' offense has started to click in the team's last two games. The team reached the 70-point mark for the fourth time this season in its last contest, a 70-63 win over Northeastern on Sunday. The driving force in that contest was a career-best 30-point effort from Kamile Nacickaite. The Dragons shot an efficient 53.8 percent from the floor, which included a 7-for-9 game from Taylor Wooton and a 5-for-7 performance from Hollie Mershon. Drexel held a lead as large as 16 points in the first half, but saw it slip away late in the contest. Nacickaite brought her team back from the brink of collapse with a crucial three-pointer with 1:22 on the clock that broke a 63-all tie and gave the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish.
William & Mary has fallen on more hard times since the Dragons won 59-58 on a buzzer-beater by Nacickaite on Jan. 16. The Tribe has lost six straight after recording its lone CAA victory of the year, against George Mason on Jan. 23. Leading scorer Taysha Pye has struggled in her last two games, including a 70-66 overtime loss against Delaware on Sunday. One bright spot for William & Mary has been the play of its reserves. The Tribe's bench is outscoring opponents reserves by a margin of 24-7 on average. This includes outscoring Delaware's bench 34-0 on Sunday.
The Div. I series between Drexel and William & Mary is knotted at 11 wins apiece. The Dragons have won three of the last four against William & Mary and two straight at home over the Tribe. William & Mary's last win at the DAC was on Jan. 27, 2008.
At halftime Drexel will welcome Team Ra-Ras to the court. The dance squad is comprise of 81 former NFL cheerleaders who have banded together to help fight breast cancer. The Team came together over the summer to choreograph and perform a dance that was recorded and placed on YouTube. United Healtcare of Pennsylvania pledged a donation of 10 cents per view of the "Ra-Ras Kick Cancer" on YouTube to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure. More than 1 million people have viewed the video since October. The Ra-Ras Kick Cancer dance will be performed live for the first time at halftime of the game and a representative from United Healthcare of Pennsylvania will be on hand to present the Pennsylvania chapter of Susan G. Komen For the Cure with a check for $100,000 for their efforts.
