Dragons Begin Post-Season Competition on Wednesday
2/22/2011 8:30:20 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
Philadelphia, Pa.- The Drexel men's and women's swimming and diving teams will head to Fairfax, Virginia for the 2011 CAA Championships. The meet begins Wednesday, Feb. 23 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 26.
Events will be held each day starting at 10:00 a.m. (swimming trials), 1:00 p.m. (diving trials) and 6 p.m. (swimming and diving finals). The women divers will kick off competition with the 3-meter event on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. for the prelims and then will return to the boards at 6:00 p.m. for the finals.
Drexel looks to post-season play as the men's team compiled a 5-8 record after sweeping Shippensburg and Bloomsburg in their last regular season competition, while the women finished 6-9 overall. The Drexel men's and women's diving team wrapped up the season with two first place finishes and two second place finishes in the meet against Navy on Feb. 11.
Last year, Drexel had a stunning showing at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships as the Dragons as multiple athletes claimed conference crowns. Armagan Yavuz won the 200 fly for the third straight year with a time that not only broke Drexel's school record, but cracked the NCAA "B" cut time. Ian Jevnick took home the CAA's Most Outstanding Men's Diver Award by winning the 1-meter dive and placing second on the 3-meter board.
On the women's side, individual and school records were set along with a new mark in the 200 medley relay. Maria Coman took down the 100 back record, Lauren Faykes knocked off the 200 back mark and Malin Wiberg established a new benchmark in the 200 breast. The three joined Morgan Cichewicz in the 200 medley relay to topple the old school mark. As a team the men finished fifth while the women placed ninth.
Tickets prices for the championship are $8 for a single session ticket and $6 for youth, senior citizens, and CAA students. All-session tickets can be purchased for $45. All are available upon entering George Mason's Jim McKay Natatorium Aquatic Center on any of the days throughout the meet. Please note that tickets can only be purchased with cash and will not accept payments made with credit cards or checks.
