Philadelphia, Pa. – Samme Givens scored 18 points and had nine rebounds and Drexel made three of four free throws in the final 11 seconds to defeat VCU at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Senior Night, 64-60. With the victory the Dragons picked up their 19th win of the season and improved to 10-7 in the CAA. The Rams are now 20-8 overall and 12-5 in CAA play.
VCU's Joey Rodriguez sank a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to trim Drexel's lead to 61-60. The Rams pressed and fouled Derrick Thomas, and the sophomore sank both free throws to give the Dragons a slim three-point advantage. The Rams came down court and couldn't get a shot off before Rodriguez was fouled with four seconds left. He missed the front end of a one-and-one and Dartaye Ruffin grabbed the board, was fouled and made one of two from the line. Drexel picked up its 10th conference win for the eight time in Bruiser Flint's 10 seasons as head coach. It was also Flint's 168th win at the school, which moved him into third place on Drexel's career win list. He was tied with Bill Herrion.
The game was tight the entire way through as there were 10 lead changes and 12 ties in the contest. The Rams tied the score at 49 apiece after a Bradford Burgess jumper with 6:11 to play. Drexel answered with a 7-0 run and held on to the lead the rest of the way. Thomas started the run with a three-pointer, his third of the game. The Dragons' defense came up with a stop and on their next possession, Gerald Colds drove the left side of the lane and banked home a lay-up with a defender on his side to put Drexel up by five points.
Frantz Massenat closed the run with a driving lay-up through traffic to give the Dragons a 56-49 cushion. VCU wouldn't go away and scored the next four points. Neither team scored again until the final minute. Colds missed a one-and-one, but Ruffin came up with a big rebound as Drexel kept possession. Massenat was fouled and he also missed a one-and-one and once again, Ruffin got the offensive board and this time was fouled. He sank both shots to make it a five-point game at 58-53.
The Dragons led at halftime, 33-28, after closing the opening stanza with an 8-0 run. Thomas hit two three-pointers, and Ruffin scored on a dunk with one second left. The Dragons led despite a huge half from VCU's Jamie Skeen. The senior had 15 of his 17 points in the first half and was 5-for-8 shooting.
Givens was a force all night for the Dragons. He was 8-for-13 from the floor and also had three steals and a pair of blocked shots. Thomas finished with 13 points, his highest scoring output since scoring 23 against Penn. Colds added 11 points, while Massenat had 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Dragons committed only seven turnovers against an aggressive VCU defense. The Rams were led by Skeen's 17 points. Brandon Rozzell scored 11, while Rodriguez finished with 10 points
Drexel closes the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Towson. The Dragons will open CAA Tournament play on Friday, March 4, against an opponent yet to be determined.
