Philadelphia – The 18th-ranked Drexel field hockey team will host Fairfield on Monday, August 29 at 3:00 p.m. at Buckley Field. The game was originally schedule for Sunday afternoon, but was postponed a day due to the impeding Hurricane Irene. The Dragons enter the contest with a 1-0 record after topping Saint Joseph's, 4-1, on Friday.
Senior goalkeeper Brooke Underwood set a new career high with five saves in the team's home opener at Buckley Field. Underwood guarded the Dragons' goal for the entire game, which marked her first career start for Drexel. Freshman Meghan Plank recorded an assist in her first collegiate start for Drexel. The junior standout Amanda Fleischut also set a new personal record, scoring her first career hat trick.
Drexel is 7-1 all-time against Fairfield. The last meeting between both teams was in 2009, when the Dragons defeated the Stags, 5-1, at Fairfield's University Field. Susan Ciufo tied Drexel's single-game record with three assists, while Jen Cairone and Kim Tunell each scored a pair of goals in the victory. The Dragons tallied 25 shots to the Stags' six.
Fairfield won its season opener against Saint Joseph's, 2-0, on Saturday at Drexel's Buckley Field. Senior Marit Westenberg and freshman Sarah Wickles put points on the board for the Stags. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin O'Donnell made one save and recorded a shutout.
