The Drexel women's soccer team had its three match win streak come to a halt on Thursday afternoon, as Old Dominion upset the Dragons, 2-1. With the loss the Dragons fell to 4-2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 10-3-2 overall.
Old Dominion (3-11, 1-5) got on the board with its first shot of the match. Nikki Clarke fed a long pass to Ashley Coutu who beat Eve Badana to her right. That would be the only shot on goal for the Monarchs in the first half, but it held up as Old Dominion took a 1-0 lead to the half. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Monarchs built a two goal cushion when Kelly Evans set up Taylor Mertz for a goal.
Drexel put the pressure on ODU for the entire second half and it finally paid off when Sam Greenfield put in her own rebound to cut the deficit to one. It was Greenfield's team-high fourth goal of the season. However, the Dragons would not be able to get the equalizer as the Monarchs won for the first time in CAA play.
The Dragons outshot Old Dominion, 17-5, in the game and had 11 of the 13 shots in the final 45 minutes. Drexel had six corner kicks in the second half and nine in the game. ODU had just two shots on goal, but both found the back of the net. ODU's Laura Bush recorded 11 saves
The Dragons return home and will face William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. The team will be celebrating Senior Day. Nine student-athletes will be playing in their final home match against the Tribe.
