PHILADELPHIA - After scoring two game-winners in two 1-0 road victories for the Drexel men's soccer team last week, junior midfielder Nathan Page was named the Colonial Athletic Association and Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week. Page, who leads the Dragons with six goals and 13 total points, became the second Dragon to win the conference's Player of the Week award. Meanwhile, he was joined on the Soccer Six's weekly honor roll by teammate Tim Washam, the league's Defender of the Week after registering two shutouts.
Page led the Dragons in scoring in 2010 as a sophomore, but missed most of last season due to an injury. This year, he has picked up right where he left off, leading the team despite playing just 10 of the Dragons' 13 contests. On Wednesday, he had four of the Dragons' 10 shots, including the game-winner in the 95th minute during overtime. Page controlled a rebound after his own shot was saved, then calmly put it past the Mason keeper to break a scoreless tie and give Drexel the 1-0 victory.
On Saturday, he got his heroics out of the way in the 42nd minute, scoring after picking off a Towson pass near midfield and driving the ball down to the top of the box. His shot beat the Tigers' keeper to his right, deflecting off the post and in for the game's lone goal.
Page shared the CAA Player of the Week honors with Don Anding of Northeastern.
While Page provided the offensive firepower last week for the Dragons, it was Washam who made it stand up. The senior keeper improved his record to 9-2-1, registering his fifth and sixth shutouts of the season in defeating Mason and Towson on the road. Washam had just five saves during the week, but all five came in pressure situations late in the games. He did not have to make his first save until the 85th minute against the Patriots on Wednesday, then added another stop before the end of regulation to keep the game scoreless and send it to overtime. On Saturday, with Towson controlling play for nearly the entire second half, Washam faced three shots in the final 26 minutes of the contest, stopping all three. He now has put together three-straight shutouts, and has kept opponents off the board for 294:30 and counting.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Delaware. The Dragons, currently atop the Colonial Athletic Association with 15 points, are two points ahead of second-place Northeastern with four games remaining in the regular season.
