Philadelphia - Freshman Lauren Hibshman's penalty stroke goal in the second half powered No. 23 Drexel Field Hockey past No. 10 Northeastern, 1-0, under the lights at Buckley Field on Senior Day. Drexel's Jantien Gunter made 11 crucial saves in the team's sixth shutout of the season. The Dragons improve to 12-6 overall, including their fifth victory over a nationally ranked program, and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Northeastern tested Drexel's defense early in the game. With just five minutes into the half, the Dragons were outnumbered in the circle, however, junior back Kristen Focht was able to stop the Huskies' fast break towards goal. Drexel's defensive corner unit shut down seven of Northeastern's penalty corner attempts to hold the Huskies scoreless leading into halftime. Sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter also turned away seven shots on goal in the first 35 minutes.
In the opening minutes of second half, Drexel's attack put tough pressure on Northeastern, but were unable to break the 0-0 tie. At 24:50, Northeastern's Deirdre Duke wound up for an open shot, but was blocked by Gunter who made a sliding save redirecting the ball away from the goal.
With just over 19 minutes left in the game, Lauren Hibshman converted on a penalty stroke for her first collegiate goal to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Gunter made another key save with three minutes left to play to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard.
The Dragons also honored their senior captain Amanda Fleischut prior to Friday night's game, which marked her final regular-season contest at Buckley Field. Fleischut leads the team with nine goal, including three game-winners, six assists and 24 points.
The 1-0 victory moved the Dragons to the top-seed in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel will conclude regular-season play at Hofstra on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y. The CAA Championships will begin on Thursday, November 1 and conclude on Sunday, November 4.
