(Box Score)
Williamsburg, Va. – No. 18 Drexel Field Hockey scored four unanswered goals to defeat No. 21 William and Mary, 4-3, on the road. Senior Amanda Fleischut tied the game in the beginning of the second half before scoring the game-winning goal in the 56th minute of play. The Dragons improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
The Tribe gained momentum off of the opening whistle. Opposing attacker Christine Johnson moved into Drexel's 25 hitting a long ball from outside the circle that was tipped into the goal by Brittany Hopkins before reaching sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter. With 23:37 into the half, Hopkins scored again to give William and Mary a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, Gunter saved Tribe's Pip Saunders shot, but couldn't clear the ball out of the circle as Taylor Hodge fired the rebound back into the right side of the cage.
Drexel responded with a pair of goals in the final minute of the first half. Freshman Lauren Hibshman fed a pass to Meghan Plank who dove towards the ball striking it past opposing goalkeeper Catherine Johnson. The Dragons didn't waste any time working the ball back into the Tribe's circle. With 34:38 off the clock, Danielle Grassi closed the gap to one, 3-2, leading into halftime.
In the 44th minute of play, senior captain Amanda Fleischut scored off the Dragons' second penalty corner attempt to tie the game, 3-3. Less than 10 minutes later, Gunter made a crucial stop against the Tribe's Hopkins to maintain the even score. Drexel's defense helped clear the ball up field, which led to a foul on William and Mary inside its circle. Fleischut blasted the ball into the left of the cage from Drexel's stopper Hibshman. The goal marks Fleischut's second consecutive game-winning goal for the Dragons.
Goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made four key saves to help the Dragons earn their fifth straight win. She now has 60 saves on the season. Opposing keeper Catherine Johnson also totaled four stops.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. against No. 10 Old Dominion.
