PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's squash team completed the first half of its season on Friday afternoon, falling to Navy at the Kline & Specter Squash Center, 7-2. Justin Singh and Binura Jayasuriya had the individual victories for the Dragons.
Playing at the No. 4 position, Jayasuriya was actually the first player off the courts on Friday as he made quick work of Hunter Beck, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6. Drexel could not win any of the other matches in the first wave of the day, falling behind 3-1.
Navy won the first three matches of the second round as well, enough to clinch the overall victory. At the top spot on the ladder, however, Justin Singh overcame a tough 14-12 loss in the first set, and faced set point three times in the second before winning, 15-13. He then won a convincing 11-4 third set, and held off Andrew McGuinness to take the fourth, 11-8.
Several Dragons had good days in defeat, including three who saw their matches go five sets. At No. 2, Ibrahim Bakir won the first 11-4 and was up 2-1 after an 11-6 loss and 11-4 victory in the second and third sets, respectively. The fourth, a closely-fought battle, went to his opponent Jim Kacergis, 11-9. Kacergis also won the fifth in a tight duel, 11-8.
At No. 3, Mike Dolente fell behind 2-0 early when Hunter Bouchard won 11-4, 11-6 in the first two sets. The Drexel freshman rallied in the next two however, pulling even with 11-9 and 11-6 victory. Bouchard eked out an 11-7 win in the fifth to take the match.
Finally, the last match on the court was that of Mark Kauf at No. 5. He also held a 2-1 advantage through three sets, losing the first 11-6 before winning 11-2 and 11-5. The fourth went to John Richey, however, 11-5, and Richey fought back from an early deficit in the fifth to win, 11-8.
Drexel will return to action next month, when it plays three matches in two days at Yale. The Dragons will take on Colby, Bowdoin and Bates in the event.
