NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Drexel men's squash team split its first two matches of 2013 over the weekend, taking on Colby and Bowdoin in New Haven. The Dragons beat Colby 5-4, taking the match when Harshil Dokania pulled out a dramatic five-set victory at No. 7. They then fell to Bowdoin, 5-4.
The Dragons got strong play from the top of their ladder in each match, winning at Nos. 1-4. Against Colby, Ibrahim Bakir bounced back from a 10-12 defeat in the first set to win the next three, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5. Justin Singh, meanwhile, cruised to a three-set victory at No. 2, 11-5, 11-5, 11-0. Binura Jayasuriya swept to an 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 win at No. 3, whle Joey Gingold handled business at No. 4 with a 7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 triumph.
The difference came at No. 7, where Dokania got off to a strong start with an 11-6 win in the first set. In the second, however, he dropped the decision 8-11, following that up with a tense but frustrating 11-13 loss in the third set. Facing defeat in the fourth set, Dokania stepped up and edged out an 11-9 win, then rallied in the fifth for an 11-7 clincher.
Later that day against Bowdoin, the men got the same production from the top of the ladder, with Bakir, Singh and Gingold winning in five sets while Jayasuriya took care of his opponent in three. That was all they could muster, however, as the Dragons fell to Bowdoin 5-4.
