PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team ended a three-match homestand with a loss on Sunday, falling to George Washington, 5-2. Marcela Rosales and Alex Bell won their singles matched to earn the Dragons' points.
The match got off to a good start for the Dragons, when Rosales and Elise Leizerovich cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, the first doubles match off the courts. It looked like Drexel would be able to get the doubles point when No. 1 team Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa held a 6-3 advantage and played a match point up 7-6, but the Colonials fought back after a lengthy game at 7-7, ultimately pulling away for the 9-7 win. Nicole Pivonka and Emma Brook fell at No. 3 doubes, 8-4.
In singles play, Marcela Rosales got off to a great start in the first set at No. 3, winning 6-2. She let up in the second set and suffered a 6-1 defeat, but regrouped in the third to win, 6-3.
Later, at No. 5, Alex Bell had a similar match. She won her first set 6-3, then lost her second by an identical score. Playing a super-tie break with the team match already decided, Bell closed out strong, winning 10-6 to take the point.
Drexel had its chances in singles play, but could not finish the job. At No. 1, Stosic had a big lead in the first set and got her opponent to set point several times, but was unable to close her out, eventually falling in a close tiebreak, 7-6 (9-7). She could not recover from that, dropping the second set 6-2. Emma Brook, playing in the No. 4 position, played two extremely close matches, holding her serve well but finding herself unable to break her opponent's serve, a problem that would eventually lead to her defeat, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Zeynep Mafa fell at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3, while Nicole Pivonka dropped her match at No. 6 in another closely-contested battle, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
The Dragons will return to action next Sunday morning when they visit Lehigh beginning at 10:00 a.m.
