PHILADELPHIA - After a successful week which saw the Dragons make two long trips to Virginia and return with victories, the Drexel women's basketball team will have its work cut out for it at home on Sunday, as they welcome in the Delaware Blue Hens for a renewal of the Dragons' oldest rivalry. Delaware comes into the game in first place, undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play and ranked No. 10 nationally in the Associated Press poll and No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Dragons are coming off a dramatic, 53-45 come-from-behind victory at Old Dominion on Thursday. Drexel trailed by 14 at the half before storming back, hitting a season-best nine three-pointers to help down the Lady Monarchs and give Drexel sole possession of fourth place in the CAA. That would give them a bye into the quarterfinals of the upcoming CAA Tournament should they maintain a top-four seed.
Delaware, meanwhile, does not have to worry about earning that bye. The Blue Hens have been unstoppable thus far in league play, going 14-0 and 23-1 overall. Their only loss came at then-No. 5 Maryland back in late December. The Blue Hens are led by preseason CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne, who is averaging 28.8 points per game to lead the league. She also sits second with 10.4 rebounds a contest. Delle Donne is the only Blue Hen averaging double figure scoring, although Lauren Carra is contributing 9.8 points per game thus far this season. As a squad, Delaware is second in the CAA with 72.8 points per contest.
Sunday's game will be preceded by a brief ceremony honoring head coach Denise Dillon, who became the Dragons' all-time Division I wins leader with her 145th-career victory at ODU on Thursday. Dillon surpassed Lil Haas, who guided the program into its Division I era with 144 victories in ten seasons after earning 120 victories in the school's AIAW era.
Limited tickets are still available, and can be purchased by visiting DrexelTickets.com or by visiting the box office on Sunday. Fans who cannot make it to the Daskalakis Athletic Center can follow all the action on DrexelDragons.com, where Pat Delsi will have the call.
