BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's basketball team came out just the way it needed to on Thursday night, rebounding from a tough loss to Delaware on Sunday and cruising to a 72-43 victory over William & Mary. Kamile Nacickaite led all scorers with 21, one of four Dragons to reach double figures. Taylor Wootton, celebrating her 21st birthday, scored 17 points, adding five assists and four steals without committing a turnover.
Drexel (14-12, 10-6) never trailed in the game. The Dragons opened up by hitting their first 12 shots from the field, not missing over the first 9:45 of the contest. Drexel finished 29-of-56 from the floor, 51.8 percent.
The Dragons set several season highs, including steals (17) and assists (24). Marisa Crane, returning from an injury which forced her to miss the last three games, had five assists and no turnovers. Drexel's 29 field goals tied its season-best. The Dragons also forced 24 William & Mary turnovers, the most by a Drexel opponent this season.
Starting the game with 12 straight field goals, Drexel forced the Tribe to call two of their timeouts in the game's first six minutes, and build a 26-13 lead with 12:10 to play in the first half. All 12 shots were not point blank looks, either. Nacickaite and Fiona Flanagan each hit three-pointers during the run, with Wootton and Mershon adding long jumpers. Tyler Hale also had four points during the game-opening run, and would finish with 12 points. Mershon ended up with 11.
After Flanagan's three-pointer made it 22-11 with 13:37 to play, William & Mary could not cut the Drexel lead to single digits the rest of the way.
As has been the case all season, the Dragons played phenomenal defense. William & Mary came into the game as the third-best offense in the Colonial Athletic Association, averaging over 70 points per game. They finished with 43, with Taylor Hilton leading the team with 12. Taysha Pye, who scored 25 points in the teams' meeting 11 days ago, was limited to just six points on Thursday. It was the tenth time this season - and the third straight game - that the Dragons have held a team below 50 points for the game.
Wootton finished with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting after opening the game 8-for-8 from the floor. Her 17 points were the most since a career-high 20 on Dec. 29 against La Salle. She also hit her first three-pointer of the season, going 1-for-1 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Dragons were 7-for-19 from downtown.
With two games remaining, the Dragons are now tied with Hofstra and UNCW for third place in the CAA. Drexel visits Towson on Sunday, and will conclude its season against VCU at home next Wednesday. The Dragons would earn the fourth seed if the season ended today. The top four seeds in the CAA earn a bye to the quarterfinals.
Drexel and the Tigers will tip things off on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Fans can follow all the action on DrexelDragons.com, with Ari Bluestein at the mic.
