PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team opened Colonial Athletic Association play over the weekend, taking care of business against Towson on Saturday at the Drexel Armory, 7-0. The win was the second-consecutive shutout for the women's squad, which has now won four of its last five and six of its last eight matches.
Doubles play opened with Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa cruising to an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 position. After starting slowly at No. 2, Elise Leizerovich and Marcela Rosales gained control late, coming back to take an 8-5 victory that clinched the doubles point. Soon after that, Emma Brook and Nicole Pivonka finished off the clean sweep with a well-played match at No. 3, winning 8-4.
Stosic continued her outstanding match in singles play, where she dominated the match at the top spot, 6-1, 6-0. The Dragons made it 3-0 when Rosales, playing at No. 3 singles, got a 6-2, 6-1 win thanks to aggressive play start to finish.
The match of the day came at the No. 2 position, where Zeynep Mafa grinded out a grueling, two-hour match that required her to come back from a set down. Mafa battled in the first, but ended up on the short end of a 6-4 set score. Keeping her composure, Mafa rallied for a 6-1 victory in the second set. In the third, Mafa fell behind early, 3-0. She got her feet under her at that point, and crept back into the match. With the score 4-5 in Towson's favor, Mafa turned on the pressure and got the next three games to take an exciting 7-5 set and the match. The crowd at the Armory got into the action, rallying Mafa as she fell behind to help clinch the overall match for Drexel.
Moments after Mafa won the team's fourth point, Brook finished up an impressive 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4. She battled in the first set before dominating the second, never stopping the aggressive and focused play that helped her finish off the first set. Alex Bell won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, while Nicole Pivonka rebounded from a tough second set to win 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 in a super tiebreaker at No. 6.
Drexel will look to continue its winning streak on Saturday, when they host Hofstra at 11:00 a.m. at the Armory. The match is the second-to-last home match of the year for Drexel, which will look to move to 2-0 in CAA play this spring.
