
Freshmen Eight Take First at the Murphy Cup

Philadelphia – The Drexel men's and women's freshmen eight boats captured first place in the grand finals at the 2012 Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple University on the Cooper River. On the day, the Dragons had eight out of 11 boats advance to the grand finals. Six of those boats finished in the top four.
The women's freshmen eight, in the John A. Daskalakis boat, placed first with a time of 8:03.24 in the grand final. The Bison posted a second-place time of 8:09.48. The Dragons also defeated Delaware, Marist, Lehigh and Saint Joseph's. Coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Meredith Bracken, Emily Gartland, Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Amanda Kleuser, Joy Yingling, Jayme Batcher and bow Elise Levito performance landed the boat an automatic spot in the finals. Drexel crossed the finish line first in the preliminary heat ahead of Lehigh, SUNY Buffao, Marist and Lafayette with a time of 8:16.56.
The women's varsity four boat posted a fourth place finish in the grand finals with a time of 9:24.30. In the grand finals, UMass pulled ahead for a first place finish with a time of 8:50.75. Loyola was runner-up followed by Colgate in third. The Dragons earned fourth and finished before Vassar and caa-foe Delaware.Caitlin Meehan coxed the Sandra Lee Sheller boat along with stroke Brooke Wertan, Elise Panacek, Amanda Dargay and bow Kathy Cheng to first place in the preliminary heat with a time of 9:49.00, which earned the shell an automatic spot in the finals. Drexel crossed the finish line ahead of Pittsburgh, Navy, Rutgers and Fordham.
The men's freshmen eight defeated the Penn Quakers with a time of 6:36.66 for first place in the grand finals. Penn clocked in behind the Dragons at 6:41.95, followed by Virginia, Bucknell, Marist and Colgate. Drexel had the top time in the preliminary heat with a time of 7:07.20 and outlasted Bucknell, UNC, Delaware, Lehigh and Fordam to earn the first spot in the grand finals. The winning Vince Vidas boat featured coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Dean Hill, Brian McCabe, Hartman Byers, Cameron Staines, James Byrne, Casimir Czworkowski, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Christian Ladd.
The men's varsity four boat clocked in at 7:57.25 for fourth place in the grand finals. Colgate took first place with a time of 7:46.82. Loyola placed second followed by Rutgers in third. Jacquelyn Durkin coxed the LeBow College of Business boat along with stroke Filip Topalovic, Marcus DeMarici, Adam Cordi and bow Patrick McGann to first place in the preliminary heat. The Dragons posted at time of 7:51.35 and advanced straight to the finals after defeating Lehigh, La Salle, Merchant Marine, Fordham, and Scranton.
The men's freshmen four boat earned second place after a close race with city-rival Temple. The Owls crossed the finish line at 7:35.90 followed by the Dragons at 7:40.56. Diana Fox coxed the Tobey & Kim Oxholm boat with stroke Butch Eribal, Mahmoud Shurbaji, David Gockley and bow Andrew Weinstein ahead of Bucknell, Virginia, Merchant Marine and Pittsburgh respectively. In the preliminary heat, Drexel placed second behind Virginia with a time 8:49.42 before advancing to the finals.
The men's varsity eight took third place in the grand finals with a time of 6:37.60. Virginia stopped the clock first at 6:26.82 followed by the Temple Owls. Coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Sebastian Ryan, Milos Rujevic, Kurt Linton, Vanja Busic, Timothy Drake and bow Paul Wisniowski passed Bucknell, Penn and Villanova. The men's varsity eight posted the fastest time in the morning with 6:53.34 in the preliminary heat to score an automatic spot in the grand finals. Drexel outlasted Penn, Marist, Washington College and Richmond in the prelims.
